Microsoft's AI strategy is moving fast โ and so is the certification landscape around it. Whether you're an IT admin deploying Copilot for Microsoft 365, a developer building agents in Copilot Studio, or a developer leaning on GitHub Copilot to write code faster, there is now a credentialing path designed for you.
The challenge is that Microsoft hasn't released a single "Microsoft Copilot" certification. Instead, Copilot knowledge is woven through multiple exams, a newer format called Applied Skills, and role-based certifications that have been updated to reflect the AI era. This guide maps every relevant credential, explains what each one covers, and tells you which one to pursue based on your job role.
What Are Microsoft Applied Skills?
Before diving into individual certifications, it's worth understanding Applied Skills โ Microsoft's newest credential format, launched in 2023 and rapidly expanded through 2025. Unlike traditional exams where you answer multiple-choice questions about concepts, Applied Skills are hands-on, lab-based assessments. You work inside a live Microsoft environment and complete real tasks โ building an agent, configuring a deployment, writing a prompt โ and Microsoft scores the output automatically.
They sit below Associate-level certifications in terms of breadth, but often above them in terms of practical validation. An AI-102 pass proves you understand how to design Azure AI solutions. An Applied Skills credential for Copilot Studio proves you actually built one.
The Full Certification Map
Here's every credential relevant to Microsoft Copilot, organised from foundational to specialist:
Microsoft 365 Certified: Fundamentals
The entry point into the Microsoft 365 ecosystem โ and now a meaningful Copilot credential. MS-900 was updated in 2025 to include a dedicated section on Microsoft 365 Copilot: what it is, how it's licensed, governance considerations, and the difference between Microsoft 365 Copilot and Copilot Studio. This is the right first step for anyone new to Microsoft AI โ no prior technical experience required.
Key Copilot topics covered: Copilot for Microsoft 365 overview, licensing prerequisites, Copilot Studio introduction, data governance and responsible AI principles.
Empower your workforce with Copilot for Microsoft 365
Microsoft's most accessible Copilot credential and a great companion to MS-900. This Applied Skills assessment focuses on deploying, configuring, and governing Copilot for Microsoft 365 in a real tenant environment. You'll enable features, review usage reports, configure sensitivity labels, and validate that Copilot is scoped correctly to your data.
Key tasks assessed: Enabling Copilot for specific user groups, configuring SharePoint content governance, using the Microsoft 365 admin centre Copilot dashboard, and applying data classification policies.
Create agents with Microsoft Copilot Studio
The most directly relevant Copilot Studio credential. This assessment validates that you can build, configure, publish, and monitor custom agents using Copilot Studio โ including connecting to external data sources via connectors, configuring topics and generative AI fallback, and deploying to Teams or a website channel.
Key tasks assessed: Creating a new agent from scratch, configuring knowledge sources and SharePoint grounding, setting up a custom connector to an external API, publishing to a Teams channel, and reviewing analytics.
Build Microsoft Copilot extensions with Microsoft Teams
Targets developers building Copilot extensions that surface in Microsoft 365 Copilot chat. You'll build message extensions and declarative agents using the Teams Toolkit and the Microsoft 365 Copilot extensibility model, connecting Copilot to external systems and data through plugin definitions.
Key tasks assessed: Building a declarative agent with custom instructions and actions, creating an API plugin from an OpenAPI spec, deploying an extension to Microsoft 365, and validating Copilot invocation via natural language.
Microsoft Certified: Azure AI Fundamentals
AI-900 is a strong companion certification to MS-900 for anyone wanting to understand the AI underpinning of Microsoft Copilot. It covers machine learning concepts, natural language processing, generative AI principles, and responsible AI โ giving you the conceptual vocabulary to talk intelligently about how Copilot works, not just what it does. Updated in 2025 to include generative AI and Azure OpenAI Service coverage.
Key Copilot-adjacent topics: Large language models, Azure OpenAI Service, prompt engineering fundamentals, AI safety and responsible use, content filtering in generative AI.
Microsoft Certified: Azure AI Engineer Associate
The premier certification for developers building with Microsoft AI services โ and the most relevant credential for anyone extending or integrating Copilot with Azure. AI-102 covers Azure OpenAI Service, Azure AI Search (used extensively in Retrieval Augmented Generation for Copilot), Azure AI Language, and the design of multi-service AI solutions. If you're building an enterprise RAG pipeline to ground your Copilot agent in proprietary data, this is the cert that validates those skills.
Key Copilot-adjacent topics: Azure OpenAI API, embedding models, semantic search with Azure AI Search, Azure AI Foundry, RAG pattern design, responsible AI for generative systems.
Microsoft 365 Certified: Administrator Expert
For IT administrators responsible for the full Microsoft 365 estate โ and increasingly that means governing Copilot at scale. MS-102 now includes Copilot management: configuring tenant-wide settings, managing Copilot pages in SharePoint, understanding the Copilot usage report, applying conditional access to Copilot-enabled identities, and auditing Copilot interactions via Microsoft Purview.
Key Copilot admin topics: Copilot admin controls in the Microsoft 365 admin centre, Purview audit and eDiscovery for Copilot interactions, data oversharing risk management, Copilot usage analytics.
Security Copilot Credentials
Microsoft Security Copilot is a separate product from Microsoft 365 Copilot โ it's an AI security analyst embedded in Microsoft Defender, Sentinel, and Intune. SC-900 (Security Fundamentals) now covers Security Copilot at a high level, while SC-200 (Security Operations Analyst) has been updated to include practical Security Copilot usage: writing natural language prompts to investigate incidents, generating KQL queries, and summarising threat intelligence.
If your role is in security operations rather than productivity, these are the certifications to prioritise over the M365-centric credentials above.
GitHub Copilot Certification
Not to be confused with Microsoft 365 Copilot. GitHub Copilot is an AI code-completion and pair-programming tool embedded in VS Code, JetBrains, and other IDEs. GitHub (owned by Microsoft) launched its own certification portfolio in 2024, and the GitHub Copilot exam validates knowledge of using Copilot effectively in a development workflow: prompt engineering for code, using Copilot Chat, Copilot for pull requests and documentation, and responsible AI use in code generation.
This cert is administered by GitHub, not Microsoft Learn, and is managed at examregistration.github.com.

Tips for Passing Microsoft Copilot-Related Exams
1. Use Microsoft Learn โ it's genuinely excellent
Microsoft's free learning paths on learn.microsoft.com are the primary study material for every certification above. The Copilot-related modules are current and updated regularly as the product evolves. Start with the official learning path linked from each exam's page, not third-party dumps.
2. Get hands-on time in a real tenant
For Applied Skills in particular, no amount of reading substitutes for actually using Copilot Studio, navigating the Microsoft 365 admin centre, or building a Teams extension. Microsoft offers a free Microsoft 365 Developer Program subscription that gives you a pre-configured sandbox tenant โ sign up at developer.microsoft.com.
3. Watch for exam updates
Microsoft updates exam content regularly. Before you study, check the exam's "Skills measured" section on Microsoft Learn โ it's the definitive list of what will be tested. Copilot topics have been added to multiple exams over the past 18 months, and older study guides may miss them entirely.
4. Start with Applied Skills before the paid exams
If you're unsure whether M365 Copilot or Copilot Studio is the right focus, attempt the relevant Applied Skills assessment first. They're free, they're practical, and passing one will tell you a lot about where your knowledge gaps are before you pay $165 for a proctored exam.
5. Renew early
Microsoft certifications (excluding Applied Skills) require annual renewal via a free online assessment on Microsoft Learn. Set a calendar reminder for 6 months after passing โ the renewal assessment is shorter than the original exam but covers new features, and Copilot updates quickly enough that leaving renewal to the last minute risks a knowledge gap.
What's Coming: The Certification Roadmap
Microsoft has signalled โ through exam revision notices and conference announcements โ that Copilot coverage will deepen across its certification portfolio through late 2026 and into 2027. The areas most likely to receive dedicated attention include:
- Copilot Studio Advanced: A deeper agent-development credential covering orchestration, custom actions, Adaptive Card design, and multi-agent frameworks.
- Microsoft 365 Copilot Administration (dedicated exam): Rather than embedding admin content in MS-102, Microsoft may introduce a standalone exam focused solely on Copilot governance, data security, and adoption management.
- Copilot for Security (SC-400 expansion): The Information Protection and Compliance exam (SC-400) is expected to incorporate Purview's role in auditing and governing Copilot interactions.
None of these are confirmed โ but tracking the Microsoft Learn certifications page and the Microsoft Tech Community blog is the best way to stay ahead of exam changes.
